Velvet ant and flower wasps

Start your colony today!! If you want a fun little ant that comes in a variety of colours this is the pet for you. especially if you want a display insect. Velvet ants live happily with other velvet ants of any size and Tenebrionidae’s which are also available. While they are called a ant they are actually a flightless wasp. The females are the only flightless while the males have wings and live much shorter. The females can live up to 2 years but they may live much shorter such as a couple months. They feed on pollen and this can easily be substituted with sugar water with a small amount of honey dissolved into it, then simply add the water mix to a bottle cap and put a small piece of tissue in it to suck up the water. They will also need some beetle jelly which we sell or you can make yourself. Flower wasp are very similar to velvet ants however they must be kept alone as they have a temper and will try to fight other flower wasps and velvet ants. velvet ants love to run around all day and climb things so make sure they have plenty of things to climb. They also dig into red soil at night so make the substrate at least a 1cm deep. IMPORTANT!! These are wasp and they can sting so handle with care as a sting is very painful!!
